Another Side to Oregon Tourism

Expert Article By: Ben Randall

One minute I'm cruising around this really cool new website about the Oregon coast (www.beachconnection.net), and the next I'm cruising around Highway 101, taking in all the clean air, the beautiful sights, gobbling some wowing food and visiting a lot of funky secret spots I found online. It's a wondrous trip that's hard to forget.

It begins with this site Oregon Coast Beach Connection: rather new, but already huge and all-encompassing in its coverage of the upper half of the coast. I started by goofing around the virtual tours (not all of them are completed), which have on average 60 different stops along various areas of the coast. I found some interesting hidden beaches near Cannon Beach, down in Newport and near Manzanita.

The site has this awe-inspiring, sprawling news section, where I discovered some great restaurants and hotels. I used their weather page to check the forecast just before I left on this really sunny weekend in February - and just like one of their stories about "winter weather secrets" said it would be - it was exceptionally warm in February. See their news section at www.beachconnection/news.

So I head out for the coast, first gobbling up insane seafood on the scenic, pristine Tillamook Bay at Pacific Oyster. They have this cioppino to die for. It's thick, hearty and so stocked full of a variety of fish it puts a hatchery to shame. The oysters are like tender little chunks of beef: extremely rich and flavorful, quite powerful for their miniscule size. The smoked salmon burger was wonderful as well, and the view of the bay was magnificent. 5150 Oyster Drive. (503) 377-2323.

That night, I stayed at the Old Wheeler Hotel: a wildly romantic hotel in the tiny town of Wheeler that was carved out of an old building once ready to fall apart. This was totally amazing to discover, as the place has an extremely manicured, old world charm, with hard wood floors, chandeliers, clawfoot bathtubs and views of the untouched and pure Nehalem Bay. It's been nicknamed the "Westin-Benson of the Oregon Coast." I'm addicted and will be back. Hwy 101 and Gregory. www.oldwheelerhotel.com. 877-4theview.

Practically next door, it's pure pizza heaven at a fairly new eatery called Guido's Ristorante. The staff here was constantly hilarious - a little like watching the cast of "Seinfeld" interacting. But it's the grub that was the real star of the show, with a thick, even juicy crust beneath a forest-like covering of innovative ingredients. The main chef there (he called himself Guido, but I think that was part of the gags of the evening) said he'd help me decide on my pizza selection and just make something up for me.

I shyly asked about meatballs on my pie, and he not only said "yes" but eventually brought me a masterpiece with various kinds of cheeses, a delicious marinara sauce drizzled on the meatballs and some kind of garden of vegetables which I can't even remember. This place also had an outstanding view of the bay. 675 Hwy 101, Wheeler. (503) 368-7778.

The next day, I wander up just north of Manzanita to check out one of the incredible hidden spots I'd found at www.beachconnection.net. A set of grandiose cliffs and a small mountain hovers over the sleepy little beach resort, and on its north face lie some wild, weird slopes. The website said it resembled Ireland in some spots, and scenes from "Planet of the Apes" in others. Somebody nailed it on the head. You walk down these steep, grassy areas to come across a strange seascape of jagged, freaky rock structures and boiling surf. It was absolutely remarkable.

I again follow the website to a place called Hug Point, near Cannon Beach. I'd been here before, actually, but never seen the array of veiled pleasures and interesting details tucked away in one rocky area or another. There's a waterfall, a few sea caves (one has some intricate structure inside that's fun to crawl), and this rather mysterious road going around the point. According to Beach Connection's site, the state had dynamited this road out of the rock in the early part of the century so old horse 'n' buggies and Model T's could make their way around during high tides.

The area is a geologist's wonderland too - but that's another story.

Next up, I wander Cannon Beach and wind up in this tiny little wonder called Fultano's Pizza. I ordered the penne pasta with meat sauce - and meatballs, of course. These meatballs are exceptional, with a marvelously multi-layered taste to them, like the subtleties you find in fine wine. The meat sauce is partially responsible for this, also with a few layers of goodness all its own. This place is a truly gourmet discovery, yet not only is it totally kid friendly but thoroughly has a romance element as well.

I came back here for dinner too, having this seriously delectable pizza with a sauce made from mashed grapes. This was fabulous, and I must say I've never had anything like it. 200 N. Hemlock and Second Street. (503) 436-9717.

That night, I bed down at a real charmer of a motel called the San Dune Inn in Manzanita, where I'm joined by my lady friend and her dog. This place is super dog friendly.

They have a large selection of movies, as well as other unique things I've never seen at a motel, like bikes for use of guests, volleyball gear, beach balls and other beachy equipment. Wow. We had a blast biking down to the beach (only a few blocks) and laughing as we got stuck in the sand. That night, after drinks at Guido's beautifully hip little retro bar (just a few miles away), we dragged the bikes out again - although I'm not sure if this what the owners had in mind for these. 428 Dorcas Lane. www.sandune-inn-manzanita.com. 888-368-5163.

In the morning, we scarf down a combo of leftovers from Guido's and Fultano's, and slowly make our way north towards home. We stop at a castle-looking bed & breakfast called Arch Cape House and take a look around, completely awe-struck. Antiques filled these rooms, and the place looks like something between a castle and a ski lodge. We make a vow to the owners to be back and stay here next time. East Ocean Rd. - S. of Cannon Beach. www.archcapehouse.com. 800-436-2848.

Open Question: Cheapest hotels near Santee (san diego area)?

looking to get a cheap bed to sleep during the week near santee or el cajon. i will be working in santee during the week and commuting for weekends. i am looking for hotels that are not listed in the regular hotel sites. the closer to my area the better. i guess i am looking for seedy motels and just a place to sleep from 9 pm to 7am and a quick shower. i will be going to a gym in the evenings so i will not even technically need the shower since the gym has them. hostels that i saw are all by the beach and overly expensive since i have a car. i am already trying to network on craigslist etc. for other options so you do not have to tell me about that. i guess just tell me where the seedy hotels nearest to santee are. i do not want to get robbed obviously. if i have to reject a couple prostitutes on check in would not bother me. i would not want to get in any altercations. my car has full coverage insurance so the world would not end if it were stolen but i obviously i do not want that to happen. any help much appreciated thanks. i will choose best answer i am looking for a cheap place to crash not looking for prostitutes. my question is straight up no innuendo. scumbags and religious freaks like "im so cool" need not respond. if idiots like him are all san diego has to offer i will just sleep in my car and save 20 to 30 bucks a day. since i can shower at the gym that is my backup plan as opposed to drivin to san ysidro for the 30 a night hotel they have down there. the cheapest hotels are about 50 a night in the area including motel 6. i am just looking for cheaper motels that do not advertise on expedia and usually they are seedy/lowlife/druggy/prositiute hotbeds and i might be able to arrive and make a deal with hotel management to get a bed for 8 hours during low usage times or a 30 a night room.

Resolved Question: What is the name of this film...?

I remember that the film is based on true story, about that woman who was a prostitute in Florida and become a serial killer, having a champion with her lesbian girlfriend while running away from motel to other motel then again, move to different motel to avoid arrest. She was finally arrested outside of the pub and eventually executed 12 years later. Question two: What is the name of that prostitute woman in real life??

Oregon USA , but even a bus round trip costs almost as much as a plane ticket. I am not supposed to fly for health reasons.

Open Question: How do I make a new start in life?

I'm close with my family but sometimes it doesn't feel enough. When I dropped out of high school (a lot of mental issues... little better now) I took a job with my dad to work in the Janitorial Service cleaning 2 day care schools every night. Up until now, my dad got fired (poor attendance, now they're shutting down and that's not my dad's primary job. He has a day job) and now I don't feel like I have to be there to help my dad because he's not doing a lot of work no more; I'm glad I worked there, it taught me the true meaning of hard work and I got to help my father and keep his stress down. I'm 20 years old, unemployed and can't even get a interview at Mcdonalds or Taco Bell (no ones hiring in the small city of Salinas). Other then my family, I have nothing here for me; no friends, no social life, no lovers or a dollar with my name. I just want more in life. I was thinking of heading down south like somewhere in L.A. (near Hollywood) and make a new start. Sounds dumb but I want an experience in life and to feel independent. I'm sick and tired of living the same day-to-day routines: wake up in the morning, watch tv, apply for jobs that you know you're one of many and so on. How can you line up a job before leaving? Can a dishwasher salary pay rent at a motel? I mean it's not like I'm dumb, I do have a few talents but I think if I play my cards right and bet on a few chances, I can make a new start and do something with my life. Maybe I'm all talk right now, but sometimes it feels like I'm going to explode and lose it; do something stupid that'll ruin my life. I don't do drugs and never will. My brother did and it messed up his life. Now he lives on the street. Sometimes, I feel like that going to be me in 5 years if I don't depart ways. What should I do? I'm close with my mom and dad and it would break my heart to do anything that would upset them. I'll be 21 next month. Don't know if that's relevant or not.

Open Question: Boyfriend wants to get a cheap motel room? Lowering my standards?

My boyfriend wants to get a motel room to save money. I just don't agree with it. It makes me feel like an escort. He lives at home and so do I. Would you get a motel (not hotel) room? He's 36. He could at least put us in a decent hotel room. We do get rooms every other weekend though.

Open Question: I need help identifying a movie's name?

Ok it's a pretty old movie and saw it about 15 years ago. The movie's storyline is in a motel, there are group of people there and people get killed by unknown killer one by one. They know that the killer is among them, but don't know who it is. So there's a detective among the group, so he interrogates everyone one by one, by going to their room one by one. However, even though the detective interrrogates them, people still get killed. And by the end of the movie, it turns out that the detective was the killer, because he was the only one who was able to go in each one's room freely. Now I have no idea when the movie came out, and who was in it. But it kinda sounds like one of Agatha Christie's novel or something like that. Can anyone help me find out the name of the movie?
