Didnt Mean to Beat a Dead Horse a Startling Look at the Crust of the Earth

Expert Article By: Gordon Hollingshead

?Ewww.., ick, who would drink a Dead Horse beer anyway?? our guest turned her nose up and eyed me with suspicion. Her skepticism caught me, and I had to laugh. I really hadn?t thought much about it as the Dead Horse Ale from the Moab Brewery provided the right taste for the moment and I had enjoyed that taste for a couple of years now.

I didn?t want to belabor the discussion, beating a dead horse about brews, as major world political issues had to be resolved within a matter of hours, over plates of steaming spaghetti back up a mountain canyon on a cold Montana winter evening. Still, our little extended family gathered around the table had to know that the host didn?t just have a twisted outlook and a penchant for brew from dead horses. I hate to leave that impression.

Finding this label and ale flavor on the shelves in Missoula, Montana had evoked memories from the murky distant past of a Christmas jaunt in the Moab, Utah area years ago. We had no idea where we were headed as we left Moab that Utah winter morning after Christmas. My wife, brother, my parents and I followed my older brother and his family as they sped away in their car, heading north of Moab up the canyon, and headed off on a bumpy back road to the west.

We drove, and we drove, out there into the middle of this dry, dusty desert country. To our delight, there were marvels as we rounded turns driving up the draws on our race across the desert. passing a small canyon above the road we could see the upper canyon wall, a sheer arched out red rock face carved and sculpted by wind and water over the centuries. At another point we stopped to take a walk/climb across a massive, carved, rounded, rock face stretching up and back to almost form a small mountain of red rock on the desert landscape.

Then the desert flattened out and we raced along, heading west on a run that seemed to go on for hundreds of miles to somewhere on the distant horizon. Then a turn to the south and the run continued this day after Christmas. We speculated that older brother had it with family over the holiday and was leading us out to lose us in the middle of nowhere.

Surprise and astonishment - the two-car caravan came to an abrupt halt at a rail, people piled out of cars, and the incredible vista suddenly opened out before and below us. Surprise and astonishment barely encompassed our reactions as we stood out on Dead Horse Point. A straight down drop-off lie at our feet, with the Colorado River winding through the Canyonlands National Park 2000 feet below us. The view out here ?in the middle of nowhere? was unbelievable, stretching out in a 270 degree panorama before us.

Thousands of years of winds, the mighty Colorado River and countless other streams and rivers had carved a landscape beyond parallel. Red cliff peninsulas and islands, and deep canyons led off in all directions. The surface of planet Earth in a place like this is truly a wonder. It takes a moment like this, a panoramic view out across the landscape with hundreds of square miles of extreme and varied terrain to really bring it all home.

We stood on a level plain that ran behind us to the horizon. In front of us the level plain had been carved 2000 feet down into canyons, crevices, streambeds and river beds. To the east, the other side of Moab, rising from the canyons and crevices, the La Sal Mountains rose above the plain we stood on. This particular day they stood tall and shined, blanketed with a fresh winter snowfall on the forested ridges and peaks ?up there?. The contrasting layers of the earth?s crust were on graphic display.

The smallness of our existence in the Cosmic Order or on a planetary scale immediately comes to mind as we drink in the Dead Horse Point of view. The little band of extended family huddled against the chill winter winds of that high desert region - three generations from Mom and Pop to we three brothers and wives, to the children of our older brother. The 70 year span of our existences was a speck in the massive timescale that was laid out before us, carving down through the crust of the planet.

Maybe the Cosmic Forces didn?t create mankind as a vehicle for recognizing and reveling in the wonders that abound on this planet. But we do it so well. We are wired to be awestruck, to stand in amazement at the phenomena that stretches out before us. And, we take with us those panoramic perspectives, those moments with family, and memories of multi-layers of the earth?s crust. They may help us shape the future directions that we go in forming the world we have some control over. Well, some of us anyway.

Then, years later when the option of having a Dead Horse Ale is questioned, the whole scope of that experience comes flooding back. It prompts another recounting of that fascinating experience out on the backroads of Utah. The broad sweeping wonders like that abound throughout the backroad country of Utah, southwestern Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. There are also some great places to stay, dynamite motels and hotels that put you right in the middle of those wonders along those routes, making exploration of the desert southwest a truly spectacular experience. More about that and an introductory guide to the adventures of the southwest can be found in the Utah-Montana Wilderness Tours component at the address: www.montanaadventure.com/out/state/us-ut.html. Savor the adventure of the desert southwest!

Open Question: Cheapest hotels near Santee (san diego area)?

looking to get a cheap bed to sleep during the week near santee or el cajon. i will be working in santee during the week and commuting for weekends. i am looking for hotels that are not listed in the regular hotel sites. the closer to my area the better. i guess i am looking for seedy motels and just a place to sleep from 9 pm to 7am and a quick shower. i will be going to a gym in the evenings so i will not even technically need the shower since the gym has them. hostels that i saw are all by the beach and overly expensive since i have a car. i am already trying to network on craigslist etc. for other options so you do not have to tell me about that. i guess just tell me where the seedy hotels nearest to santee are. i do not want to get robbed obviously. if i have to reject a couple prostitutes on check in would not bother me. i would not want to get in any altercations. my car has full coverage insurance so the world would not end if it were stolen but i obviously i do not want that to happen. any help much appreciated thanks. i will choose best answer i am looking for a cheap place to crash not looking for prostitutes. my question is straight up no innuendo. scumbags and religious freaks like "im so cool" need not respond. if idiots like him are all san diego has to offer i will just sleep in my car and save 20 to 30 bucks a day. since i can shower at the gym that is my backup plan as opposed to drivin to san ysidro for the 30 a night hotel they have down there. the cheapest hotels are about 50 a night in the area including motel 6. i am just looking for cheaper motels that do not advertise on expedia and usually they are seedy/lowlife/druggy/prositiute hotbeds and i might be able to arrive and make a deal with hotel management to get a bed for 8 hours during low usage times or a 30 a night room.

Resolved Question: What is the name of this film...?

I remember that the film is based on true story, about that woman who was a prostitute in Florida and become a serial killer, having a champion with her lesbian girlfriend while running away from motel to other motel then again, move to different motel to avoid arrest. She was finally arrested outside of the pub and eventually executed 12 years later. Question two: What is the name of that prostitute woman in real life??

Open Question: How do I make a new start in life?

I'm close with my family but sometimes it doesn't feel enough. When I dropped out of high school (a lot of mental issues... little better now) I took a job with my dad to work in the Janitorial Service cleaning 2 day care schools every night. Up until now, my dad got fired (poor attendance, now they're shutting down and that's not my dad's primary job. He has a day job) and now I don't feel like I have to be there to help my dad because he's not doing a lot of work no more; I'm glad I worked there, it taught me the true meaning of hard work and I got to help my father and keep his stress down. I'm 20 years old, unemployed and can't even get a interview at Mcdonalds or Taco Bell (no ones hiring in the small city of Salinas). Other then my family, I have nothing here for me; no friends, no social life, no lovers or a dollar with my name. I just want more in life. I was thinking of heading down south like somewhere in L.A. (near Hollywood) and make a new start. Sounds dumb but I want an experience in life and to feel independent. I'm sick and tired of living the same day-to-day routines: wake up in the morning, watch tv, apply for jobs that you know you're one of many and so on. How can you line up a job before leaving? Can a dishwasher salary pay rent at a motel? I mean it's not like I'm dumb, I do have a few talents but I think if I play my cards right and bet on a few chances, I can make a new start and do something with my life. Maybe I'm all talk right now, but sometimes it feels like I'm going to explode and lose it; do something stupid that'll ruin my life. I don't do drugs and never will. My brother did and it messed up his life. Now he lives on the street. Sometimes, I feel like that going to be me in 5 years if I don't depart ways. What should I do? I'm close with my mom and dad and it would break my heart to do anything that would upset them. I'll be 21 next month. Don't know if that's relevant or not.

Open Question: Boyfriend wants to get a cheap motel room? Lowering my standards?

My boyfriend wants to get a motel room to save money. I just don't agree with it. It makes me feel like an escort. He lives at home and so do I. Would you get a motel (not hotel) room? He's 36. He could at least put us in a decent hotel room. We do get rooms every other weekend though.

Open Question: I need help identifying a movie's name?

Ok it's a pretty old movie and saw it about 15 years ago. The movie's storyline is in a motel, there are group of people there and people get killed by unknown killer one by one. They know that the killer is among them, but don't know who it is. So there's a detective among the group, so he interrogates everyone one by one, by going to their room one by one. However, even though the detective interrrogates them, people still get killed. And by the end of the movie, it turns out that the detective was the killer, because he was the only one who was able to go in each one's room freely. Now I have no idea when the movie came out, and who was in it. But it kinda sounds like one of Agatha Christie's novel or something like that. Can anyone help me find out the name of the movie?
