Oh Ranger at New Frontier Motel

Oh Ranger

Expert Article By: Roger Turner

If you like a good story I have real gem for you. It's a book called Oh, Ranger!; a fascinating book first published in 1928 written by Horace Albright and Frank Taylor.

I can't put it any better than Stephen T. Mather, director of the National Park Service from 1917-1929. In the first edition of this book Mr. Mather says:

"To me no picture of the national parks is complete unless it includes the rangers, the "Dudes," the "Sagebrushers," and the "Savages." I like to picture the thousands of people gathered about the park campfires, asking questions of the rangers. In fact, I like to be at the campfire myself, and listen to the thousands of questions asked about the parks and their wild life. Especially am I interested in the replies of the rangers. These men have become keen students of human nature. In their brief, informal talks, they have learned to anticipate many of the questions of the visitors.

I like the idea of this book, "Oh, Ranger!" It tells the story of the parks in the simple, informal style of the rangers. It gives the rangers the credit due them for their fine work in guarding the national parks and preserving them in their primeval beauty. It breathes the spirit of the people who belong to the parks, who make possible the parks as they are today.

They are a fine, earnest, intelligent, and public-spirited body of men, the rangers. Though small in number, their influence is large. Many and long are the duties heaped upon their shoulders. If a trail is to be blazed, it is "send a ranger." If an animal is floundering in the snow, a ranger is sent to pull him out; if a bear is in the motel, if a fire threatens a forest, if someone is to be saved, it is "send a ranger." If a Dude wants to know the why of Nature's ways, if a Sagebrusher is puzzled about a road, his first thought is, "ask a ranger." Everything the ranger knows, he will tell you, except about himself. Now "Oh, Ranger!" tells you about him."

Here is an excerpt from Oh Ranger, from ranger Joe Douglas that you might like.

Ranger Joe Douglas was crossing Yellowstone Lake on skis in the dead of winter. He came to a place where the snow was blown off the ice. Skis are of no use on the ice, so Doug unstrapped them and carried them over his shoulders while he walked across the ice. In an unwary moment, he plunged through an air-hole into the icy water. The skis bridged the hole and undoubtedly saved his life. Clinging to them, Doug cautiously pulled himself from the water and trudged on, his wet clothes frozen stiff about his body. Reaching the shore, he dug through four feet of snow, located some wood, built a fire, undressed, and stood there naked while his clothes dried by the blaze.

"It's a wonder you didn't freeze, Doug," someone said, when the ranger told his story.

"Naw, it wasn't cold," he retorted. "It was one of the warmest days of the winter?only 'bout seven below zero!"

Here's another Oh Ranger fun "story". This is from a ranger in Glacier National Park. I'm pretty sure this one could be classified as a "whopper".

A ranger doing patrol duty on the boundary line, having run out of supplies and being in immediate danger of starving, told how he grabbed his trusty old gun for which only one shell remained, and, going beyond the park line, maneuvered around carefully, hunting diligently so as to be sure to get the best possible results with the one shot.

Finally he came upon a brace of quail perched in a cluster of brush close enough together for both to be bagged at one shot. Carefully raising the gun, he fired. Imagine his great joy when on running to the spot to pick up his two quail he found that he had killed six more, which were on the other side of the bush and which he had not seen.

Hearing a great commotion out in a small lake near by, he saw a big buck deer that had become frightened at the sound of his shot and had run out into the lake and bogged down in the mud. Dropping the quail, he hurried out into the lake and cut the buck's throat.

In carrying the deer out, he sank down into the mud himself up over his boot tops. Upon reaching the shore, he sat down and pulled the boots off to pour out the water and found in them a dozen nice fish.

Placing the quail, fish, and deer together so that they could be more easily carried, he was struggling to get the load on his shoulders. This put a great strain on his suspender buttons, and one of these flew off with such force that it killed a rabbit a hundred yards in the rear.

I enjoyed reading Oh Ranger. It gives you an idea of what it must be like to be a national park ranger.

You can read the whole book of Oh Ranger online at the national park service website.

Open Question: Cheapest hotels near Santee (san diego area)?

looking to get a cheap bed to sleep during the week near santee or el cajon. i will be working in santee during the week and commuting for weekends. i am looking for hotels that are not listed in the regular hotel sites. the closer to my area the better. i guess i am looking for seedy motels and just a place to sleep from 9 pm to 7am and a quick shower. i will be going to a gym in the evenings so i will not even technically need the shower since the gym has them. hostels that i saw are all by the beach and overly expensive since i have a car. i am already trying to network on craigslist etc. for other options so you do not have to tell me about that. i guess just tell me where the seedy hotels nearest to santee are. i do not want to get robbed obviously. if i have to reject a couple prostitutes on check in would not bother me. i would not want to get in any altercations. my car has full coverage insurance so the world would not end if it were stolen but i obviously i do not want that to happen. any help much appreciated thanks. i will choose best answer i am looking for a cheap place to crash not looking for prostitutes. my question is straight up no innuendo. scumbags and religious freaks like "im so cool" need not respond. if idiots like him are all san diego has to offer i will just sleep in my car and save 20 to 30 bucks a day. since i can shower at the gym that is my backup plan as opposed to drivin to san ysidro for the 30 a night hotel they have down there. the cheapest hotels are about 50 a night in the area including motel 6. i am just looking for cheaper motels that do not advertise on expedia and usually they are seedy/lowlife/druggy/prositiute hotbeds and i might be able to arrive and make a deal with hotel management to get a bed for 8 hours during low usage times or a 30 a night room.

Resolved Question: What is the name of this film...?

I remember that the film is based on true story, about that woman who was a prostitute in Florida and become a serial killer, having a champion with her lesbian girlfriend while running away from motel to other motel then again, move to different motel to avoid arrest. She was finally arrested outside of the pub and eventually executed 12 years later. Question two: What is the name of that prostitute woman in real life??

Oregon USA , but even a bus round trip costs almost as much as a plane ticket. I am not supposed to fly for health reasons.

Open Question: How do I make a new start in life?

I'm close with my family but sometimes it doesn't feel enough. When I dropped out of high school (a lot of mental issues... little better now) I took a job with my dad to work in the Janitorial Service cleaning 2 day care schools every night. Up until now, my dad got fired (poor attendance, now they're shutting down and that's not my dad's primary job. He has a day job) and now I don't feel like I have to be there to help my dad because he's not doing a lot of work no more; I'm glad I worked there, it taught me the true meaning of hard work and I got to help my father and keep his stress down. I'm 20 years old, unemployed and can't even get a interview at Mcdonalds or Taco Bell (no ones hiring in the small city of Salinas). Other then my family, I have nothing here for me; no friends, no social life, no lovers or a dollar with my name. I just want more in life. I was thinking of heading down south like somewhere in L.A. (near Hollywood) and make a new start. Sounds dumb but I want an experience in life and to feel independent. I'm sick and tired of living the same day-to-day routines: wake up in the morning, watch tv, apply for jobs that you know you're one of many and so on. How can you line up a job before leaving? Can a dishwasher salary pay rent at a motel? I mean it's not like I'm dumb, I do have a few talents but I think if I play my cards right and bet on a few chances, I can make a new start and do something with my life. Maybe I'm all talk right now, but sometimes it feels like I'm going to explode and lose it; do something stupid that'll ruin my life. I don't do drugs and never will. My brother did and it messed up his life. Now he lives on the street. Sometimes, I feel like that going to be me in 5 years if I don't depart ways. What should I do? I'm close with my mom and dad and it would break my heart to do anything that would upset them. I'll be 21 next month. Don't know if that's relevant or not.

Open Question: Boyfriend wants to get a cheap motel room? Lowering my standards?

My boyfriend wants to get a motel room to save money. I just don't agree with it. It makes me feel like an escort. He lives at home and so do I. Would you get a motel (not hotel) room? He's 36. He could at least put us in a decent hotel room. We do get rooms every other weekend though.

Open Question: I need help identifying a movie's name?

Ok it's a pretty old movie and saw it about 15 years ago. The movie's storyline is in a motel, there are group of people there and people get killed by unknown killer one by one. They know that the killer is among them, but don't know who it is. So there's a detective among the group, so he interrogates everyone one by one, by going to their room one by one. However, even though the detective interrrogates them, people still get killed. And by the end of the movie, it turns out that the detective was the killer, because he was the only one who was able to go in each one's room freely. Now I have no idea when the movie came out, and who was in it. But it kinda sounds like one of Agatha Christie's novel or something like that. Can anyone help me find out the name of the movie?
